An independent, non-profit, community school designed to educate and empower children preschool through Kindergarten.  Our integrated curriculum nurtures the growth of a child's mind, body, and spirit. Our preschool program is play based. Play is valued as essential to young children's learning and development. The kindergarten and first grade curriculum meets the highest grade-level standards in language arts, math, social studies and science. We offer weekly classes in cooking, music, art and movement.

Job Opportunity
Kindergarten/First grade Teacher
The Selkirk School in Sandpoint, Idaho is seeking an experienced and qualified teacher for the 2012/2013 school year. This is a lead teaching position in a kindergarten/first grade classroom. Selkirk is a small independent non-profit community school serving 21 students preschool through kindergarten on four acres just west of Sandpoint city limits. The Selkirk School uses an integrated curriculum that offers hands-on activities, daily play opportunities and connection to the natural world.

Job duties include:
*Daily supervision and observation of students
*Daily set-up and clean up of classroom
*Order materials and supplies
*Ability to lead circle time, stories and facilitate weekly arts, crafts, movement, nature walks and cooking activities
*Ability to teach grade level language arts, math, science and social studies and meet state benchmarks.

*Knowledge/ experience with early childhood development
*Love of the outdoors
*Classroom management skills
*Positive attitude, team player, excellent communication skills
*Weekly newsletter to parents, bi-annual parent-teacher conferences
*Participation in open houses, school out reach, oversee student enrollment
*Participation in school fundraisers
*Willingness to use established school curriculum and schedule
*Familiarity with early childhood education, play-based preschool and/or developmentally appropriate practices recommended

Teaching in a small, independent school involves additional responsibilities, which might not exist in a more formal school setting. The school offers the opportunity for the teachers to treat the school as their home, and make it their own.

In addition to teaching requirements and responsibilities, Selkirk teachers are also involved in the following activities:
*Participation in school governance and decision-making activities
*Supervise regular cleaning of classrooms and care of building and grounds. This would include lawn mowing, snow shoveling, spring and fall work days.
*Mail, email and phone message pick-up and follow through during non-school times
*Attend all school Board meetings
*Be knowledgeable of school income and expenses

One year teaching experience, ECE units or other teacher training required. Bachelor’s Degree, early elementary teaching credential and or Masters in Education preferred. The Selkirk School Board supervises this position. Hours: Full-time, 5 days a week Monday-Friday 7:45AM-2PM Follows the LPOSD yearly schedule This is a salaried position based on experience and training.
